Warrumbungles and Pilliga

We spend three days cycling on the plains to the west and the foothills to the north of the Warrumbungles, as well as a two day return trip through the Pilliga forest from Baradine. Along the way we'll walk with emu's at Emu Logic farm, walk among sculptures in remote Pilliga forest andsample traditional German sausages and Sauerkraut and other delicacies at a unique off grid location at Barkala Farm.

Day 1

Coonabarabran

This is the arrival day and we spend the first night about 10K west of town in the shadow of the Warrumbungles. This is a great kick off location and there is also the possibility of checking out the night sky at a local observatory. This area actually has 'dark sky' legislation to preserve the sky watching qualities many come to this area for. The motel allows us to park vehicles here while on tour

Day 2

Torraweenah

Today we head off on our first day of cycling up and over the range and through the Warrumbungles NP a region of past volcanic activity with unusual lava formations that are a bit of a distinguishing feature of the region with many of these peaks visible from plains we cycle over the next few days. After heading west we circle south along classic back roads to the small town of Torraweenah.

Emu Logic Farm

Day 3

Baradine

After circling south yesterday we will be heading straight north with amazing views of the Warrumbungle's to the left. This morning we'll stop at Emu Logic, a small independent emu farm where the owner is happy to take visitors for a walk to meet his birds. not far further north we'll hit the dirt road again before rolling into Baradine on 20 K of flat sealed road.

Day 4

The Pilliga

Today we make our way into the Pilliga and the Timmallallie National Park stopping along the way to visit the Sculptures in the Scrub. We spend most of the day making our way through state forest and along National Park trails before arriving at Barkala Farm. After a day of dust, dirt and isolated roads this stay for the night will seem like an oasis with a lovely German heritage cafe complete with German sausages and Sauerkraut, woodfired pizza, home made gelato and much more.

Day 5

Baradine

We head back west today returning to Baradine through National Park and State Forest trails. We take a shorter more direct route back to Camp Cypress which means we can spend a leisurely morning exploring Barkala farm. Their cafe, the Blue Wren, has a unique inner city feel but is out in the back blocks of nowhere, the perfect place for breakfast and great coffee. Barkala farm is also known for its quality pottery and pottery school and the host, Maria, is happy to package any items.

Day 6

Coonabarabran

This is the final day of our cycle tour but there is still some great cycling ahead. We head back south along the 20 K of flat sealed road that we came into town along then turn and head east, this time travelling along roads the travel right along side the escarpment of the Warrumbungles in the north of the park. You'll get some great views of volcanic peaks, the Siding Springs observatory and pass through rolling rural countryside before arriving back into Coonabarabran through the back door.
